Big Beautiful DollsBlue BoxI found my Blue Box soldier in a container with my son’s old toys. He is fully articulated and can wear most Ken clothes. He is an Elite Force Army figure and was manufactured in 2001. His original hands were black gloves, but I swapped them out with extra hands from an action figure.
Ezekiel, Zeke for short, reminds me a little of Denzel Washington, so he is named after Denzel’s character Ezekiel (Easy) Rawlins in the movie Devil in a Blue Dress. They were released in 2017 by One World Doll Project. Crafted by African American designer Stacey McBride-Irby, they are articulated at the elbow, knee and chest and are curvier than traditional Barbies with larger behinds and feet. I was introduced to the line when I came across Kimani in a flea market for $10. After a quick online search, I was intrigued. The Cynthia Bailey (center) is a numbered limited edition collectors item. They represent Ghana, the USA, India and Mexico. To me, their same gorgeous face sculpt with differences in skin tone and make up show the beauty of the Diaspora. They all look like Black girls to me!
CJ is named after Madame CJ Walker, Issa after Issa Rae and Helene reminds me of my cousin, so she has her name. Queens of AfricaSpice Girls21st Century ToysWWEOne of a Kind |
